I have developed a new product called the Amplifier Buddy (hereafter referred to as "AB"). As I get more into operating with my HL2+ and HR-50, I at times want to connect the combination to and drive my linear amp, an RF2K-S. But, like most/all amps, the single PTT and TRX inputs are in the back (of course) and not easily accessible. So, I thought of making a WiFi controlled relay to handle the amp TRX and PTT connections and allow two rigs to share these single inputs. Rig control is not addressed since it both can take so many forms and would complicate the AB.
The AB can handle 100W of RF. Following an ATU with the AB
is not recommended. This because of the high current and/or voltage that may be present between an ATU and an antenna when the ATU corrects the match to achieve low VSWR. The reason this configuration is not recommended is due to the sizing of the AB relay. Use of the AB in front of an antenna system which includes an ATU is fine.
The AB is approximately 2.75" x 2.75" x 1".
The
AB is based on an ESP8266 and runs Tasmota firmware. This allows WiFi
connectivity. The AB can be accessed and controlled by a web page
interface, MQTT (for those into Node Red, I am one of them), or serial
control via USB. I added a USB serial interface for both powering the
unit and to provide a serial console.
Do others find themselves wanting to connect more than one rig to your amplifier? The AB is a solution for this.
Here are some pictures of the AB.
